H-VbEHPsAllison Moon, author, educator and sex-positive priestess knows a lot about girl sex. So much so, that she wrote a book, GIRL SEX 101, (with illustrator KD Diamond) and it drops on April 7, 2015. Having read an advance copy, I can tell you that GIRL SEX 101, with over 14 diverse and entertaining stories, will be one of those books on sexuality that will become a staple recommendation for all those it speaks to and for sex educators and sexuality professionals along the 61ar4n0uydL._UY250_lines of ; Sex for One, by Betty Dodson, Women’s Anatomy of Arousal by Sheri Winston and Opening Up by Tristan Taormino.
I asked Allison to participate in my semi-regular feature, Smutty Smarties of Sex and she graciously agreed. Pressing my luck further, she also let me pick her brain about writing, sex ed and girl sex:

ALLISON MOON’S FIVE FAVORITE SEX TOYS AND WHY:

Unknown-2 VAMP Taluluah G2 dildo: I love the steep angle and prominent head of this dildo. It’s also got the perfect squish-ability. It’s perfect for strap-on sex.
 Unknown-3
Crystal Delights Crystal Minx Silver Fox Tail Butt Plug: I love having a lush, sporty tail! The butt plugs are beautifully made, they’re the right size, and feel elegant when they’re in place.
 Unknown-4
Njoy Pure Wand: There’s nothing better for g-spotting than the Njoy Pure Wand.  Nothing.
 Unknown-5
The Liberator ThroeI don’t like lying in a puddle after a hot romp. The Liberator Throe is soft, pretty, and really effective at keeping the mess contained. I use one nearly every time I have sex.

Magic Wand: Does anyone not say the Magic Wand?! It’s the John Deere of vibrators!

TALKING ABOUT GIRL SEX WITH ALLISON MOON:

What inspired you to write GirlSex 101?
Girl Sex 101 originated in 2007 as an workshop by the same name at Burning Man’s queer women’s camp, Camp Beaverton. Since then I’ve taught the workshop around the country and realized that people without access to the feminist sex toy stores where I usually taught could also use the information. So I translated the workshop into a book, added an erotic storyline and hired kd diamond to do the art.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about girl sex?

I think many people still don’t know what women even do together in bed, which to me shows a real lack of imagination, and implies a lot of folks aren’t really having as good of a time as they should be.

Until GirlSex 101, there was a dearth of modern, accessible books on the subject, why do you think that is?

The book publishing industry needs sure things, and lesbians aren’t often considered a big-spending demographic. When it comes to sex, many books play it safe. Either they go for the largest market share by talking only to straight people, or they go the serious-face PhD route which may offer great info but often sacrifices humor and entertainment. I wanted to play it both ways: offering a book that was educational while still being fun to read.

How did you come up with the unique and clever idea of teaching about sex ed within a story?

Many people get their sex-ed cues from porn and erotica. Especially with the kerfuffle around 50 Shades of Gray teaching people bad BDSM, I noticed that many people use fiction as a means of education. On the flip side, a how-to book may be informative, but if it lacks context– if it doesn’t teach you how and when to talk about things– it may not end up imparting any good lessons. I wanted to not only tell people how to talk about sex, I wanted to role model what that conversation can look like when things are getting hot and heavy.

How did you and KD Diamond, the very talented illustrator, come to work together?

Kd and I have been great friends for years. I love her work– she too is an artist with a keen eye for savvy education, as demonstrated by her magazine Salacious. I knew we’d make a great team.
What was the biggest difference between writing GirlSex 101 vs. Lunatic Fringe and Tales of the Pack?
Compared to writing two novels, Girl Sex 101 was a breeeeeeze!  The information was already solidified through my years of teaching the workshop. All it required was expanding, editing, organizing, and collaborating with guest writers. Maybe I’m making it sound too easy. It took a while, and some effort, but it was tons of fun.

Who inspired you to become a sex educator?

Like many folks I’m sure you know, I was one of those precocious kids who all her friends sought sex talk from. My father was an R.N., so I picked up his passion for accurate, shame-free body talk.  So I was the first kid in my Catholic kindergarten who knew all the anatomically-correct terms for genitals. As I got older, I relished the role of providing information like that. I explained to my peers how to masturbate, how babies were made, how to put in tampons, all the stuff my peers weren’t getting in school or often from their parents. That never really stopped for me.

Do you have plans for a series, like GirlSex 201, GuySex 101, QueerSex 101?

Mmmmaybe. This was a huge undertaking, involving a lot of moving parts. I’m deeply grateful to our Kickstarter backers for offering up the advanced funds so I could create this project. I’m open to the idea of sequels or a series, but nothing’s underway yet. Also, I want to naturally segue into your coaching/teaching business for writers …

Who is your writer spirit animal?

I don’t use the term spirit animal. I will say that Michael Cunningham is my favorite novelist, bell hooks is my favorite essayist, and Li Young Lee and Adrienne Rich are tied as my favorite poets. I learn something from everything I read.
What is your number one writing tip?
Give yourself permission. Permission to suck, to soar, to wax poetic, to write in circles, to have bad grammar and spelling, and to not make any sense. Just give yourself permission to write.
I went to your fascinating writing class at a conference years ago Radical Creativity, and I was infused with such inspiration and excitement. Will you be teaching more writing classes in the future?
Thanks!  I love teaching writing and creativity classes. I’ll gladly teach whatever people want me to! I’m for hire!
Do you do teach or coach educators/writers via Skype?

Occasionally. Writing is my main squeeze, but I’m always interested in helping others along their paths.
